Value For Money

The price of around £700 and specification of this lens is comparable to those of lenses produced by the main camera manufacturers.
The closest equivalent for Canon cameras is their popular 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens, which sports virtually identical specifications, but is currently around £100 less expensive.
Nikon camera owners looking at their 24-120mm f/4 VR lens may also consider this offering from Sigma. Although the Nikon lens offers slightly more telephoto reach, it is around £100 dearer than this Sigma optic.
Sony don’t offer a standard zoom lens with a constant f/4 maximum aperture, or covering this focal length range currently, so this lens may be of particular interest to those who own a Sony Alpha SLR, or SLT camera.

Alternatives

– I’ve already mentioned the Canon EF 24-105mm 4.0 L IS USM (see Gordon’s Canon 24-105mm f4 review) which offers similar features plus greater sealing at a slightly lower price and the Nikon AF-S 24-120mm f/4.0G VR (see my Nikon 24-120mm f4 review) which has a 14% longer reach but also costs a bit more.

– There are also shorter alternatives: for Nikon bodies there’s the Nikon AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G VR (see my Nikon 24-85VR review) which can be had for less than 450 EUR. Or if you prefer the 24-70mm range, there’s an f2.8 Nikkor for Nikon bodies, or both f2.8 and f4 versions for Canon’s bodies.

– Or you consider going longer with a Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM, a Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G VR (see my Nikon 28-300VR review) or a Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 L IS USM which is a serious piece of gear not really comparable to the other lenses size-, weight-, and price-wise.

Intro

The 24-105mm f4 OS is Sigma’s second full-frame lens in its Art-series which (quote Sigma) “offers sophisticated optical performance and abundant expressive power to deliver faithfully on your artistic vision”. Blimey.

The first full-frame Art lens was the 35mm f1.4 DG HSM which put in some astonishing performance in the corners of the full-frame sensor (see my Sigma 35mm f1.4 review). So expectations for the new zoom are high regarding optical performance and also build-quality. A focal range from 24mm to 105mm makes it a very practical zoom for full-frame bodies covering a pretty wide angle of view up to a light tele-photo reach.

The lens is available for Nikon, Canon, Sony (w/o image stabilization), and Sigma DSLRs and Sigma offers a unique conversion service should you switch your preference for bodies from say Canon to Nikon. Just send your Art lens in to Sigma-service and they can convert the mount to your preferred new one. The lens is priced around 900 USD / 800 EUR which puts Sigma’s offering below Nikon’s 24-120/4.0G VR at 1000 EUR but clearly above Canon’s EF 24-105mm 4.0 L IS USM which currently sells at around 800 EUR. Conversion service for this lens costs around 200 EUR which seems like a small price to pay considering the cost of a new lens. In my review I’ll put Sigma’s Art 24-105mm f4 DG OS HSM zoom to the test on a Nikon D800 to see how the lens performs on todays highest resolution full-frame DSLR.

Sigma 24-105mm f/4 DG OS HSM A Verdict

With their latest lens releases, Sigma appear to be changing their past image of a manufacturer of lenses that are less expensive than the major camera manufacturers, instead concentrating on lenses that deliver performance to rival the best available.
This lens certainly is capable of producing outstanding clarity, at a price that is comparable to those of camera manufacturers own lenses. It should certainly be considered as a viable alternative if you’re in the market for a lens of this specification.

Sigma 24-105mm f/4 DG OS HSM A Performance

At 24mm, sharpness is already outstanding in the centre of the frame at maximum aperture and approaching excellent levels of clarity towards the edges. In fact, diffraction appears to be the limiting factor on performance at this focal length, with sharpness towards the edges of the frame increasing slightly at f/5.6, otherwise there is no performance gain from stopping down.
This high level of performance is maintained at 50mm, with outstanding sharpness in the centre and excellent clarity towards the edges of the frame at maximum aperture. Stopping down to between f/5.6 and f/8 results in peak performance as sharpness is outstanding across the frame.
Finally, at 105mm, there is a slight drop in performance at maximum aperture, with sharpness in the centre approaching excellent levels in the centre of the frame, and good clarity being produced towards the edges of the frame. Peak performance for this focal length is realised at f/8, where sharpness improves to outstanding levels across the frame.

The blue column represents readings from the centre of the picture frame at the various apertures and the green is from the edges. Averaging them out gives the red weighted column.
The scale on the left side is an indication of actual image resolution. The taller the column, the better the lens performance. Simple.
For this review, the lens was tested on a Canon EOS Mark III using Imatest.

Chromatic aberrations are reasonably well controlled, just exceeding 0.75 pixel widths at 105mm and f/4, as well as f/22 at 24mm. This low level of CA should pose few issues, even in large prints, or harsh crops from the edges of the frame.

CA@24mm

CA@50mm

CA@105mm

Chromatic aberration is the lens’ inability to focus on the sensor or film all colours of visible light at the same point. Severe chromatic aberration gives a noticeable fringing or a halo effect around sharp edges within the picture. It can be cured in software.
Apochromatic lenses have special lens elements (aspheric, extra-low dispersion etc) to minimize the problem, hence they usually cost more.
For this review, the lens was tested on a Canon EOS 5D Mark III using Imatest.

Falloff of illumination towards the corners of the frame is fairly well controlled. At 24mm the corners are 1.9 stops darker than the image centre and at 105mm the corners are 1.7 stops darker than the centre. Visually uniform illumination isn’t achieved until the lens is stopped down to f/8 or beyond throughout the zoom range.
Barrel distortion can be quite noticeable at 24mm, with 4.5% barrelling being present. This is replaced with 1.31% pincushion distortion at 105mm, which is a very mild amount of distortion. If straight lines are paramount, then you’ll be glad to hear that the distortion pattern is uniform across the frame at both ends of the zoom range, which should make applying corrections in image editing software fairly straightforward.
A petal-shaped hood is supplied as standard with the lens, which does a decent job of shading the lens from extraneous light that may cause unwanted flare and loss of contrast. During testing there were no issues with flare and contrast holds up well, even when shooting into the light.

Facts from the catalog

As usual I’ll have a look at the technical data first. I’ve rated the features with a (or ), when it’s better than average or even state of the art, a if it’s standard or just average, and if there’s a disadvantage. I’ll compare it to Nikon’s AF-S 24-120/4.0G VR (which I’ll simply call “the Nikon”) and “the Canon” EF 24-105/4.0 L IS USM in this section.

Size (diam. x length): 89 x 109 mm (3.5 x 4.3 in) w/o lens-hood which is a little larger than the Canon or the Nikon. But on a full-frame body this lens still has a nice size.

Weight: 885 g (31.2 oz.). This is pretty hefty esp. compared to the Canon at only 670g. The Nikon weighs 710g. but it adds to the impression of a solid build.

Optics: 19 elements in 14 groups. That’s in the same ball-park as the competition with 17/13 or 18/13 lenses/groups. But 14 groups have 28 air/glass-surfaces that produce a lot of opportunities for flares and ghosts. I’ll test how prone the lens is to internal reflections. The cross-section shows 7 aspherical or (extra-)low dispersion elements.

Closest focus distance/max. magnification: 0.45 m (1.5 ft.) / 1:4.6. In my test I was able to get down to 1:4.3. The Canon and Nikon equivalents offer similar reproduction ratios which comes in quite handy.

Filter-thread: 82mm. So you probably need to get a new set of filters. Canon and Nikon take 77mm filters which are standard on today’s professional lenses.

Image stabilization: Yes, just like the Canon and the Nikon. At these focal lengths image stabilization really helps a lot.

Auto focus: HSM (hyper sonic motor), so it works on DSLR-bodies that don’t have an AF-motor built in like Nikon’s D3x00 and D5x00 series, and also offers manual-focus override by turning the focus ring. The Canon and Nikon offer that too.

Covers full frame/FX or smaller = very good, same as the Nikon and the Canon.

Price: around 800 EUR new (incl. 19% VAT) = not as cheap as the Canon but cheaper than the Nikon.

Comes with a nice semi-soft lens-case that is well padded but has no strap, rear and front lens-cap are included.

Distance information is relayed to the camera, so a Nikon body can do all the advanced exposure-related stuff with this lens e.g. with the system flash.

Aperture ring: No, just like all competitors.

Sealing: No. The Canon and Nikon are sealed at the lens-mount.

The score in the “features-department” is 1/7/5. The minus-point being the large filter thread. All-in-all the feature set looks OK with a 4.4x zoom, constant f/4.0 aperture and image stabilization being the most important features of this lens, but it’s also lacking the sealing of the Canon and Nikon alternatives.

Sigma 24-105mm f/4 DG OS HSM A Handling and Features

Weighing around 885g, this certainly isn’t a lightweight lens. High quality plastics and metals with a glossy finish have been used for much of the lens barrel, which provides a good tactile feel to the lens and a metal lens mount adds to the overall robust feel of the lens. However, Sigma make no claims about this lens being resistant to dust and moisture. The lens balances well on the Canon EOS 5D Mark III used for testing, but as this lens is quite large for a standard zoom at 109mm long and reasonably weighty, combining it with some of the more compact DSLRs available may result in an unbalanced pairing.
A silent HSM focusing motor powers autofocus, resulting in quick focus acquisition and the ability to apply manual focus adjustments at any time. The manual focus ring is well damped, but is quite narrow, which can hamper operation a little. Focusing is performed internally, so the huge 82mm filter thread does not rotate, making this lens ideal for use with polarising and graduated filters, if you can afford them in that size. The close focusing distance of 45cm is fairly typical of this kind of lens.
The optical stabilisation system fitted to this lens promises to allow sharp images to be taken at shutter speeds slower than would be possible without the system enabled. Sharp images can be produced around half the time with shutter speeds as low as 1/13sec at 105mm, which is roughly three stops slower than the usual rule of thumb would dictate necessary.

Focus, build quality, and image stabilization

Focus accuracy and repeatability is critical to consistently produce sharp shots. Repeatability (the accuracy of focus on the same subject after repeated focus-acquisition) of this lens is excellent with no outliers over a series of 40 shots. And there is no performance variation whether the lens focuses coming from infinity or from minimum focus distance. The lens mostly focuses very fast at around 0.5 sec from infinity to 1m. But sometimes it overshoots the target and hunts a bit but still manages to find focus in a round 0.7 seconds.

The lens’ AF can be fine-tuned with Sigma’s Optimization Pro software that also doubles up as a way to update the firmware of the lens. You get a total of 16 individual points to fine-tune AF: for 24mm, 50mm, 70mm, and 105mm focal length and for distances of around 45cm, 0.9m, 2m, and infinity. Just put the lens in the USB-dock and tune away. Unfortunately there was no time during my test period to try-out this unique tool.

The focus ring has no slack/play between its movement and the focus-action and a throw of around 90 degrees, which is a bit short at the long end for accurate focus wide open. The focus ring is extremely small with only 6.5m of rubberized surface but movement is pretty smooth as is the zoom action. Both the focus-ring and the zoom-ring turn the same way as Canon zooms. Unfortunately that is the opposite direction to what Nikon users have come to expect. AF-operation is pretty quiet on the outside, and if you record video with the built-in microphone focus-movement produces only a slight “clack” at the start of the movement and little other noises. The operation of the image-stabilization is inaudible.

Shaking the lens does produce some noise. But apart from that the general impression of build quality is pretty high: A high quality metal/plastic construction and nine rounded aperture blades. And the double-barrel zoom design can only be moved slightly from side to side when fully extended to 105mm focal length.

To test the effectiveness of the image stabilization I did a series of over 140 controlled test-shots hand-held at 105mm focal length. Around half of those were with OS=OFF at 1/100 of a second and the other half was with OS=ON and shutter-speeds that were 4 – 8 times slower. After rating the sharpness of those images at 100% magnification on a scale from 0 to 5 I compared the samples with shorter shutter speeds and OS=OFF to those samples with longer shutter-speeds and OS=ON. I can report that the OS is good for around 3 stops of stabilization, that is the set of shots at 1/12 sec were on average as sharp as the set of shots at 1/100 sec. This is a very good result and makes the images stabilization of this lens a very useful feature.

Now it’s time to check out the results in my Sigma 24-105mm f4 OS quality and Sigma 24-105mm f4 OS sample images pages, or if you’d like to skip to chase, head straight for my verdict!
