The Canon Rebel SL2 is a tiny ultralight DSLR that can create professional DSLR-quality images in the hands of a professional photographer. Unfortunately some of the people-picture technology we take for granted in today’s mirrorless cameras like the Sony A6000 and in the iPhone X aren’t in this basic DSLR, so it’s not as good for casual people pictures as these other cameras. This SL2 is ideal for backpackers and serious photographers who want the lightest possible DSLR for awesome travel, nature and landscape photos, but not the best idea for casual people photos.
Specifically, this SL2, like many other inexpensive DSLRs, lacks facial recognition for regular viewfinder shooting. More exotic DSLRs like Canon’s 5DSR and most mirrorless cameras like iPhones the basic Sony A6000 automatically recognize faces today, which is how they are able to autofocus magically on people’s eyeballs and usually get perfect exposure under most conditions. This SL2 has no facial recognition for regular viewfinder shooting, and therefore its people pictures aren’t always in focus or perfectly exposed unless you sometimes manipulate focus and exposure settings.
This new Canon Rebel SL2 is an update of 2013’s superb Canon Rebel SL1, which was the world’s smallest and lightest DSLR. This new SL2 adds quite a few features like a flipping LCD screen and a bigger battery with 35% more life over the SL1, but weighs 1¾ oz (50g) more. This SL2 is better than 2013’s SL1, but mirrorless cameras and iPhones have improved remarkably since 2013, so this SL2 can pale in comparison.
The SL2 has slightly better color rendition than Sony for nature and landscape photography.
This SL2 offers for common defects of falloff (peripheral illumination), lateral color fringes (chromatic aberration), distortion and diffraction. You can turn each of these ON or OFF.
This SL2 is a superb instrument, delivering magnificent technical quality in a tiny package — but you may need to pay more attention to exposure and focus than you do with other modern camera types. For nature and landscape photos, it’s magnificent. With 24 megapixels its images look fantastic even printed 6 feet wide!

Image Quality: Quite good
I shot with the EF-S18-55mm F/4-5.6 IS STM lens, with a 35mm-equivalent focal range of about 29-88mm. Most test images were captured using the Standard Picture Style and Shutter- or Aperture-priority exposure modes.
The image quality was quite good, especially for a camera in this class. Colors are nicely saturated and natural-looking, as you can see in the images below.

The exposure is accurate in pretty much all modes. Even the SL2’s center-weighted metering did a good job of exposing the reflective water and sand, as well as the darker grassy foreground in the sample image below. It was bright enough that I could stop down the aperture to f/13 to get a broad depth of field. As a result, almost all of the image — from foreground to background and everywhere in between — looked in focus.

Highlight and shadow details were well-maintained, even in high-contrast scenes such as this late-afternoon beach scene.

High-contrast scenes often produce purple fringing along edges of dark against light (or vice versa). There was no noticeable fringing along the edges of the trees against the bright sky.

The pop-up flash worked well to fill in shadows outdoors, as seen in the images below. If you look closely, you can even see the catchlights (small white reflections of the light) in the girls’ eyes.

Canon’s auto white balance tends to retain the warm colors of, say, tungsten lighting. With the SL2, as with other newer Canon cameras, you can set the Auto WB to Ambience priority or White priority. The former delivers warmer images (similar to sepia toned) under tungsten lighting, while the latter adjusts for the light and balances the colors to help produce more accurate whites. You can see the difference in the images below:

The SL2 uses an older nine-point autofocus system when shooting through the viewfinder, but the camera was responsive when focusing on a variety of subjects, ranging from children playing to flowers. Images were sharp and detailed, as shown in the flowers below; look closely, and you can see details of the bugs that landed there.
With continuous shooting of up to 5 frames per second (dropping to 3.5 fps when using AI Servo continuous AF), the camera is capable of stopping action, like the girl running in the image below.

Canon has equipped the SL2 with its excellent Dual Pixel autofocus, which kicks in when shooting in Live View or capturing video. This AF system provides speedier and smoother AF in the latter two modes so, unlike with many other cameras, using autofocus in Live View (usually a slow process) is noticeably faster.
Image Quality
Our test scene is designed to simulate a variety of textures, colors and detail types you’ll encounter in the real world. It also has two illumination modes to see the effect of different lighting conditions.
The EOS Rebel SL2 (EOS 200D) produces JPEGs with pleasant, saturated colors similar to that of other Canon cameras. It’s fairly conservative with JPEGsharpening compared to its APS-C peers, though plenty of detail is still presented. The SL2 does offer the ability to fine-tune sharpening via Picture Styles, and based on tests on , we’ve found that you’ll get better results by setting the strength to 4, fineness to 1 and threshold to 2.
The SL2 has a relatively unsophisticated noise reduction system in JPEGs, which does a so-so job of removing noise, though at the expense of fine detail.
Detail capture in the underlying Raw files is very good and on par with the SL2’s peers. Noise levels are also competitive, including at the highest sensitivities.
Raw dynamic range
The Rebel SL2 doesn’t offer a ton of latitude when it comes to brightening shadows, as there’s a fair amount of noise, which is especially noticeable when compared to the best APS-C cameras. It’s more competitive with the Nikon D3400, and note that where the latter clips the right square completely to black, the SL2 maintains the dark grey color.
If you try pushing files shot with the same exposure but different ISO settings up to the same brightness, you can see that you have to push the camera to about ISO 400 to overcome the noise the SL2’s sensor is adding. This means you probably shouldn’t drop below ISO 400 if you’re trying to capture extra dynamic range in low light conditions. The SL2 isn’t the best APS-C camera in terms of dynamic range, but it is in-line with its peers.

Серия Rebel сильно изменилась за последние 4 года. Теперь сенсорный дисплей свободно вращается, а благодаря глубокому хвату, камеру стало удобнее держать одной рукой.
В новую фотокамеру Canon EOS Rebel SL2 был добавлен режим Selfie Mode — новички смогут контролировать размытие фона, даже не понимая принципа работы диафрагмы. Переключатель режимов теперь встроен в верхнюю панель и во время съёмки находится под большим пальцем. Он располагается практически на одном уровне с корпусом, поэтому вы вряд ли заденете его.
Некоторые кнопки управления были перемещены, чтобы освободить место для большого экрана. К стандартному набору добавилась кнопка Wi-Fi, расположенная в левом верхнем углу. EOS Rebel SL1 сильно не хватало беспроводной связи, теперь, у EOS Rebel SL2 есть Wi-Fi, Bluetooth и даже NFC для сопряжения с Android-смартфонами.
