Small camera, big sensor

Inside the GR III is a 24-megapixel APS-C sensor, the same size and resolution as you’ll find in the Sony A6400, a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. Yet the GR III packs it, and an 18.3mm f/2.8 lens, into a body that’s hardly any bigger than the Sony RX100 VI, a point-and-shoot with a much smaller 1-inch-type sensor. What’s more, Ricoh managed to fit in a sensor-shift stabilization system — something the GR II lacked — which is good for 4 stops of shake reduction.

This makes for image quality that is remarkable in absolute terms and astonishing when you consider it’s coming from such a small camera.

But at $800, the GR III a niche product that won’t have broad appeal. Clearly, it can’t replace your phone, so it’s still a second thing that needs to be carried. It also doesn’t offer the added flexibility of a point-and-shoot with a zoom lens or a larger interchangeable lens camera.

While many people will see that as limiting, it’s also liberating. With less complexity, there’s less to worry about, and that keeps you tuned in to the scene rather than fussing with the camera. That’s what makes the GR III such a joy to shoot with.

Fujifilm XF10

Fujifilm X100F

Камера Ricoh GR II имеет довольно крупные для такого формата камер сенсор при не очень высоком разрешении, что позволяет надеяться на неплохие характеристики снимков.

Но не будем рассчитывать на слишком многое т.к. камера выпущена в 2015-ом году, а сейчас на дворе 2018-ый.

В камере установлен объектив 18.3/2.8 (28 мм в эквиваленте полнокадровой системы), что в совокупности с сенсором 16 Мпикс позволяет снимать на относительно длинных выдержках без риска получить смаз.

Т.е. по классическому правилу 1/фокусное расстояния мы имеем ограничение в 1/28 сек для съемки с рук. На такой выдержке можно снимать в полутёмных помещениях на ISO 100, а камера предлагает нам возможность повышения ISO до внушительных 25600. Насколько же в реальности можно зайти далеко с повышением ISO мы посмотрим далее в тестах.

Это график MTF для встроенного в Ricoh GR II объектива. На графике показаны очень хорошие характеристики, но график расчётный, а не реального образца.

Хочу также отметить качественный и большой задний ЖК экран (3″, 1,230,000 пикс) — это большой плюс. У него нет возможности наклона и поворота — это минус.

Выдержка в камере ограничена 1/4000 сек. Для большинства ситуаций этого более чем достаточно, а если будет слишком яркое солнце, то в камеру встроен программный фильтр ND4, который позволяет снимать и в такой ситуации. Нельзя сказать что это удобнее, чем просто укорочение выдержки, но у большинства малогабаритных камер нет опции с ND фильтром и там придётся докупать стеклянный ND фильтр, а тут проблема решается сразу в камере.

В камере имеется встроенная вспышка, которая позволяет подсветить сюжет там где без неё не обойтись. Вспышка вписана в корпус камеры и совсем незаметная. Считаю, что это большой плюс.

Количество кадров на одной батарее не очень большое, но тут нужно учитывать и большой сенсор и большой ЖК экран. В конце-концов можно запастись запасными аккумуляторами, как делают все владельцы беззеркальных фотокамер. В Ricoh GR II аккумулятор совсем небольшой по размеру, так что вас сильно не отяготит.

Ricoh GR III – Производительность

Минусы Ricoh GR II

Такой кадр я делал и на Sony A7 II и теперь могу сравнить цветопередачу зелёного (листвы). На Sony она совсем другая.

Вполне можно снимать с боке. На снимке запчасти от моего старого компьютера, с которыми играет младший сын (4г) 🙂

It’s still the best compact camera for street photography

This has always been the raison-d’etre of the GR line. All the little features come together to create a camera that can rightfully be called the king of the streets.

The small size. Always with you. Can be easily dropped into any bag or pocket. It’s like a wallet. The only place you can’t comfortably place it is your back pocket.

It’s ultra-light. If you wan’t to put it on a strap, you won’t even feel it hanging over your neck.

It’s low profile. Very unassuming. It looks like a dinky point and shoot. It IS a point and shoot. It’s non-threatening, it doesn’t look like a serious camera at all. You will likely look like a clueless tourist, instead of a creepy paparazzi. And that is what makes it stealthy. It’s what will allow you to shoot close. To get candid shots you wouldn’t otherwise get with a larger camera.

Here’s another shot where snap focus does the work. Set to f/8 and a fast enough shutter speed, and your only limitations will be how fast you can hit the shutter.

Is the GR III’s auto focus really that slow?

Fast enough for documentary photography. Maybe not fast enough for fast moving toddlers, but paired with snap focus for street photography, the GR III isn’t too bad. It falls short compared to most cameras in the AF department, but it’s not useless.

Hmmm. This is a tough one. What is considered slow and fast depends on what you’re comparing it to. Plus your expectations, your experience with other cameras etc…

But my short answer is – yes.

But let me try to explain.

With the addition of phase-detect auto focus to the GR III, I expected a significant improvement in AF speed. But we didn’t get that. In normal day-to-day use, I didn’t actually find a significant difference in AF speed vs the original GR.

After release, the GR III had a lot of trouble in locking AF in low light situations. This has been improved a fair bit with firmware. But overall AF speed has remained unchanged.

As of this writing, the current firmware is v1.31. You can always check for the latest Ricoh GR III firmware on the official Ricoh site.

So, all my comments regarding the AF applies to firmware version 1.31. If there is any significant improvement in AF in future firmware updates, I’ll update this section.

Although I’m not sure if any further updates can really improve the AF speed. It’s likely a limitation of the lens design itself. This is likely as fast an AF we’re ever going to get.

My main problem is that it’s just slow, by 2020 standards. This is true whether you’re shooting in low light or good light.

As I stated in the pros and cons section at the start of this review, even my Olympus PEN-F, a camera released in 2016, which has no phase detect AF, is noticeably faster in S-AF vs the GR III. They are about similar in C-AF, which is to say, near useless.

So why is this a problem? Didn’t I just say above that this is a camera that was mean to be used in snap mode? Yes, and the slow AF is partly why this is a camera that is meant to be used in snap mode! But the main reason I find this frustrating is that it limits the shooting envelope – for me.

If you’re shooting street photography (with snap focus) and also shooting static scenes (e.g. city scapes, street scapes, macro, food etc..) then AF speed is not an issue at all. In fact, stop reading this right now and just go buy the camera.

But, if you wanted the GRIII to double as an all around social camera as well – this is where it could get frustrating. If you’re looking to get shots of family sitting on a couch or sitting across from you in a restaurant, again, this isn’t a problem.

The problem is once you start shooting anything that moves. The GR III’s AF just can’t keep up. I’m not talking about sports here. Obviously, this wasn’t meant to be a sports camera. But I’m talking about my 1 year old walking across the living room. Hit rate is well below 50%.

Toddler running? You’ll be lucky to get a 20% hit rate. Now, it could be that my expectations are a bit high. This wasn’t designed to shoot fast moving toddlers.

But compared to a “competitor” like the Fujifilm X100F (released in 2017) which uses Fuji’s last generation AF system, the GRIII just lags behind. The new Fuji X100V is even faster still.

Now, this is mostly due to what may be unique circumstances for me. If you’re not shooting fast moving toddlers, then you’re good to go. Use snap focus when shooting street, then use AF for non-moving subjects.

But I think it’s just unfortunate that the AF speed did not see a major leap, because the GR3 with it’s compact form factor and lightweight is just the perfect take-anywhere, drop into the diaper bag kind of camera.

AF accuracy isn’t an issue though. Even in pretty low light, I’ve had the GR III lock on accurately, it just doesn’t do it fast enough, by 2019 and 2020 camera standards. Again, this is only an issue for certain subjects and styles of shooting. If you’re shooting static scenes, this will be a non-issue for you.

This is why I must emphasize that this complaint might be due to my unique circumstances. I wanted the GR III to be the camera that would document my 1 year old.

But if you’re planning on using the GR III for street shooting + landscape/street scenes/architecture/travel photography? Then it’s a non-issue. Use snap focus for street shooting, then AF for everything else, since you don’t need speed. It’s perfect for this use case.

This was shot with touch AF. I had my camera on snap focus, set to about 1.5 meters, when I saw the plane I just touched the LCD to focus and shoot, no need to manually adjust snap focus to infinity.

Highlight Weighted Metering

This one deserves special mention because it has honestly been a game changer for me. It’s something that I’ve only been using recently, but I’m definitely loving the results, especially when used with the GR’s fantastic high contrast black and white mode.

Highlight weighted metering (also found in some high end Nikon DSLR’s) is basically a way to automatically expose for the highlights. This keeps you from clipping your highlights, which will allow you to take advantage of the impressive dynamic range of modern day camera sensors, and ‘bring back’ the detail in your shadow areas in post-processing.

This is helped by the ISO-invariant nature of the GR III’s sensor. Basically, shooting at ISO 3200 isn’t much different from under-exposing a shot at ISO 100, then bringing back the shadow areas 5 stops in post-processing.

But for me, I tend to use highlight weighted metering differently. I use it as a one-step solution to get really dark shadows and render straight out of camera high contrast scenes. Paired with the high contrast black and white mode, it’s a look that I’ve really grown to love.

Broadly speaking, the Ricoh GR III offers at least comparable pixel-level image quality to the best 24MP APS-C cameras in its class. This isn’t damning with faint praise — the 16MP sensor in the GR / II was really showing its age, but the GR III’s sensor on the other hand is very competitive. Ricoh’s ‘Std’ color profile still isn’t great, but a range of ‘image control’ picture modes offer considerable versatility for JPEG shooters.

Studio scene

Our test scene is designed to simulate a variety of textures, colors and detail types you’ll encounter in the real world. It also has two illumination modes to see the effect of different lighting conditions.

Against other 24MP APS-C cameras, we can see that the GR III easily holds its own, with excellent detail capture across the scene, often resulting in moiré patterning. It holds up very well against the Fujifilm XF10 in the center of the frame, and the increased resolution of the new 24MP sensor versus the 16MP sensors of the older X70 and GR II is noticeable. And though this scene is primarily designed to evaluate image quality based on a camera’s sensor — which is why we use standard lenses for each interchangeable lens system — it can be useful to get a broad idea of uniformity for fixed-lens cameras as well. You can see evidence of variation at points outside the center of the scene.

It’s worth noting that shooting our studio scene on a 28mm equivalent lens is a real ‘stress test’, in the sense that wide-angle lenses generally aren’t well-suited for shooting flat targets at close distances. Despite this, the GR III’s lens looks great.

On to noise performance: just as with detail capture against other 24MP interchangeable lens cameras, the GR III holds its own as the ISO value climbs. At least part of this is due to noise reduction applied to the Raw at all ISO values 200 and up. As that ISO value climbs even higher, we begin to clearly see evidence of this noise reduction on the GR III’s Raw files (it’s that sort of ‘cross-hatching’ pattern). Whether this Raw noise reduction matters to you is really, well, up to you, though it can trip up third-party noise reduction software. All cameras here start to fall apart by the time you hit ISO 25600.

Let’s transition to the JPEGs. In terms of sharpening, the GR III looks a bit softer than the Sony and Fujifilm while still showing hints of moiré patterning from the Raw capture. The haloing visible around these gray boxes on our ColorChecker indicates somewhat high-radius sharpening, when the camera is at its default values. In terms of JPEG color in its ‘Standard’ picture profile, well, we have reservations. The red patch in particular is muted and skewed more magenta than we’d like, and the yellow patch is dull and slightly greenish. The orange patch is likewise desaturated. In fact, our color wheel shows all colors from red-orange to yellow are muted with fairly unpleasant hue shifts.

Of course, the Ricoh GR III comes with a variety of different JPEG scene modes, of which we’ll have a look at the real-world impact below.

JPEG Color modes

The GR III offers nine ‘Image Control’ color modes (shown below), plus ‘HDR’ and two user-customizable settings. Between them, they provide the JPEG shooter with an impressive amount of ‘one click’ control over the look of their images.

Of the five color modes, I find that ‘Positive Film’ works well for shooting sunny scenes (especially with a bit of positive exposure compensation) while four ‘monotone’ modes offer a lot of versatility in black and white, from the tonally rich ‘soft’ to the aggressively contrasty ‘Hi’.

The Chase

What’s great

Discreet design: Perfect for not attracting the ire of people you are shooting

Silence is golden: You can shoot people at a somber indoor event without being ticked off for noisy shutter sounds.

It’s tiny: This camera won’t be left at home because it’s too big to carry out and about- it fits in your hoodie pocket.

Image quality: The 24mp sensor and lens together are capable of taking incredibly crisp and detailed images.

Ricoh’s Positive Film jpeg preset, and the B&W preset options: The Positive Film preset has almost as big a cult following as the camera itself. Old school-ish, without looking like a cheap Instagram filter.

Macro: A great bonus feature of the camera is its ability to get close and capture details of flowers, critters, products, or food. Yay!

Haptics Despite it being so small, the GR’s control layout is easily navigable with ‘normal’ sized hands. It’s designed for one-handed operation on the street.

Snap focus: This is a great feature for street, or for any situation where you need to respond quickly to a changing scene. This feature also partly negates the first item on the ‘What sucks’ list.

3-axis IBIS: Excellent for hand-holding to shoot static subjects in low light.

Three customizable user modes: Although I have set two of them up, I find that the quick menu is so easy to use, that I don’t bother unlocking the mode dial to change mode settings in real-world situations.

Finally, It’s just such great fun to shoot with! I have never owned a camera before that just makes me want to take pictures as much as the GR III.

What sucks (a bit)

Autofocus: Compared to much of its competition, and considering that the latest GR has phase-detect as well as contrast-detect focusing, it is not the snappiest camera to lock on to subjects. This is especially true in the case of low light and/or when using the macro feature, when it can hunt for focus quite a bit. Also, I found that using ‘Pinpoint Focus’ hunts more in low light than either ‘Auto Focus or ‘Select Autofocus’. ‘Select AF’ is my go-to setting.

Low light, high ISO performance: It’s not a full-frame Sony, so don’t expect clean images into the ISO stratosphere. I find the GR high ISO performance on par with my Fujifilm X-T4.. Don’t forget there are flash options (see below), and also the IBIS, which can reduce the required shutter speed, and allow you to shoot at lower ISO values.

Price: It’s not cheap, especially considering its limited video specs.

Unremarkable video: Meh. There are other options for this- the best of them are from Fujifilm, Sony, and Panasonic They won’t fit in your pocket, though.

Battery life: So buy some extras, Cheap Charlie!

No weather sealing: I live in a place where it rains for five months of the year, so this does suck.

The Bottom Line

If you shoot street, documentary, or just want a genuinely pocketable travel camera with excellent image quality, and if you can afford the admission price, just buy one!

Most standard speedlight systems are unwieldy on the tiny GR III. Here are two that have been well-reviewed and play well with the form factor and portability: the Lightpix Labs Q20 II flash (manual only) and the Pentax AF201FG flashgun (TTL metering).

Most YouTube photography channels focus on gear reviews. This is great and provides useful information for prospective buyers of new equipment, but here are two guys whose focus is more on the philosophy of taking photographs: Jamie Windsor and Sean Tucker. I have found both to be informative and inspiring.

P.S. Whilst I am certainly guilty of becoming a fanboy of whichever new camera I own, I have never written a camera review, so this will be my first. I‘ve had my GR III for only three weeks, so I will leave this post open and update it over time.

Ricoh GR III – Дизайн и особенности

GR и GR II предлагали соответствующий (хотя и слегка шумящий) 16-мегапиксельный датчик APS-C, но этот новый выпуск содержит обновление 24,24-мегапикселя, которое работает с ISO 100-120,400. Это выдает изображения Raw и JPEG, хотя записывает видео Full HD только в формате 60p, а не в 4K.
